Calne Single Use Plastic (SUP) Campaign
An initiative to encourage Calne shops to divest themselves of
single use plastic wrapping and packaging
single use plastic wrapping and packaging
Moving toward making Calne free of single use plastic (SUP)
The Calne SUP group joined the Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) campaign in 2018/9.
The SAS October newsletter which includes a survey about unnecessary plastic wrapping on products is HERE.
So far the campaign has pressured supermarkets to offer reusable bags for fruit and veg and to remove some of the unnecessary plastic wrappings, but there’s still a long way to go.
To launch the Calne campaign in 2019 we did a “Mass Unwrap” at Sainsburys - with their permission we stood outside the store and gave customers compostable paper bags to swap for the plastic wrapping on their shopping. The following day there was an event in the Town Hall for all things reusable, home made cosmetics, reusable water bottles - we used food that was past its sell by date to make lunch, etc.
It was the first event of its kind!
Our aim is to get supermarkets to do away with single use plastic and/or provide skips on their premises so that people can leave the unnecessary plastic at the point of sale.
