Avon Needs Trees (ANT)

Bristol based Avon Needs Trees is a registered charity (1184386) that is buying land throughout the Bristol-Avon catchment area to reforest it. Planting trees will sequester carbon from the air, enhance biodiversity and provide natural flood management, as well as water and air quality improvement, and more public amenity space.
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has" - Margaret Mead  - American cultural anthropologist 1901-1978

3rd March 2021: Bad News about Seend...
Back in October your donation helped us raise over £7000 to get our campaign to buy 19 acres at Seend off the ground. Since then we've worked incredibly hard to raise the rest of the money and I'm proud to say our fundraising over the past four months has been extremely successful.

Unfortunately, a routine archaeological survey of the land has found evidence of potentially significant "magnetic anomalies" on the site we were planning to buy. These could indicate buried heritage - possibly Roman or Medieval - and if we bought the land now we would have to pay a minimum of £25,000 for investigatory archaeological work to find out more. If that returned even more results we would open up the charity to potentially enormous obligations. The only alternative would be to limit our planting to two hectares of trees - less than a quarter of what we had planned - which represents poor value for our funders and supporters. As such, having consulted with a very wide range of experts and professionals in the field, the trustees have made the painful decision not to go ahead with the purchase.

We're going to be looking for other pieces of land we can buy and we would love to hear from anyone who knows of local plots coming onto the market. We hope that donors will be patient and allow us to transfer funds to another purchase, but we completely understand if donations were made specifically for this 19 acres. If so, please email me via dorian.wainwright@avonneedstrees.org.uk and we will make sure money is returned.

On behalf of everyone involved with ANT I want to say thank you for all your support and we hope you'll continue to back us as we continue in our mission to create new, permanent woodland across our catchment area.

Many thanks

Dorian Wainwright

2020/09/14: The purchase of Hazeland near Calne was completed in August 2020 and launched this month. Avon Needs Trees are now raising the funds for another 19 acres at Seend, near Melksham. ANT sees this as a long-term project, 20 years minimum, buying land to replant and rewild, to create new permanent woodland.
